Part IV: The End
Once the wall was up, it was finally time to lay some pavers. The McHusband said he thought he'd measured and found that the big 2 x 2 pavers were the same height as the smaller 1 x 1 filler pavers. Well, between his measuring and the actual placement of the pavers, the small ones shrank (shrunk?) so he had to do more work than planned to get everything laid out. Yeah, that finding really made his day.
Remember that day after work that I forgot my sports bra so I hit the grocery store for some ingredients and a bottle of wine? Well, while I worked on the wine, the McHusband worked on the patio.
Those 2 x 2 pavers weigh in at 100 pounds each. (We checked with the bathroom scale.) The McHusband laid 50 of them.
I'm not sure how much my wine glass weighs, but I probably sipped from it 50 times that night.
The McHusband made pretty good progress that night and he picked pack up where he left off the following Saturday.
Lucky for him, he had a helper this time, a helper whose greatest contribution was making sure he didn't work for too long without a break.
Once all the pavers were down, it was time to brush the special sand over the whole space so that the pavers would stay in place. While the McHusband was busy with that, I attended the gun show. (Cue whistle.)
Guess what? We have a patio!
The walkway turned out really nicely.
The McHusband spent a lot of time on the retaining wall and it shows. It came together really well and will serve as a great seating area. Now I just need to get some flowers and other greenery into that space.

And the right side by the walkway:
We're on the lookout for some awesome deals on patio furniture. For now, well, let's just say it's a blank canvas with a lot of potential. And lots of room for folding camping chairs.
To my McHusband: You worked extraordinarily hard and it paid off. The patio looks spectacular, and you should be really proud of how it turned out. Thank you so much for your effort, time, sweat, and even for your blood. I can't tell you how much I appreciate it all.
So, are you ready to get started on that screened-in porch?

WOW -- the McHusband REALLY outdid himself!! If my math is correct that was 5 THOUSAND pounds of pavers he hefted!!! When he is 40 and his back bothers him and his knees hurt more than they do now.... he can SIT on his patio and reflect on its construction.... BTW - when you come FD weekend... we have 2 of those folding camp chairs you are welcome to until you can get that patio furniture on sale after Labor Day!! Probably just need to ask your friends to BYOB and BYOCC when possible... Looks GREAT!!! ENJOY !! McMom
